New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, did not confirm he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
