What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
