Vince Zampella, the mind behind the wildly popular video game Call of Duty, has tragically died in a traffic collision in the state of California aged 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, the video game company that he helped create.

The celebrated game designer passed away following his car crashed and was engulfed in flames on a highway in Los Angeles on this past Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his family and friends, his family, and everyone impacted by his work," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts stated.
