In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the next season and $17M for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for winning the league MVP award.
• $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for winning the ROY honor.

The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and makes him a free agent at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, enters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that scored teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a equalizing home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
