The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
