The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France plans a personal account this autumn named A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts his time spent in jail.

This news was made less than two weeks following the former president left prison while he contests the court ruling related to illegal collaboration in a case to secure political financing provided by the regime of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in one passage, implying the book centers around his musings during seclusion rather than extensive analysis regarding the packed and troubled jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader was present by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It affects one on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

The former president, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural past president of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure from France to experience jail.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he would use his time to compose an account.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to go through the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned later flees to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

He was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel were stationed in an adjacent room.

It was stated that he had eaten just yogurt while inside worried that prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Although he had access for self-catering but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client daily while he was in prison, stated during proceedings security would be better released than inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming after dark and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began in late October after a French court gave him a half-decade term for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial planned for early next year.
