The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
