Larian Studios Explains Its Application of AI Tools for Next Project
The developer behind hit RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its upcoming project, generating immense anticipation within the player base. However, subsequent remarks from the company's co-founder have added clarity to the conversation, touching on the developer's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a latest statement, Larian's director explained that the developer is utilizing AI technology for specific supporting tasks. These involve enhancing PowerPoint slides, producing rough visual ideas, and writing temporary text.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the final content in the game will be crafted exclusively by real artists. "Our team is writing every line manually," he affirmed.
Our studio is constantly growing our roster of writers and are actively putting together dedicated writer rooms.
Since this area is being specifically referenced — we currently have over twenty visual developers and have positions available for further talent.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at letting our team spend greater focus on the creative process.
Any AI system implemented properly is additive to a artist's routine, not a replacement for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The admission of employing this technology at first provoked backlash among a segment of the community. In reaction, Vincke provided more clarification on social media.
"We use AI tools to explore references, in the same way we use Google and reference books," he wrote. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then swap out with original concept art."
He noted, "We've hired talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously detailed the team's practical approach to this technology, grouping its use into three main areas:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using tools to speedily create simple mock-ups of scenarios to validate concepts before complete production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how machine learning could eventually facilitate emergent reactivity, specifically in simulating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.
He specifically stated that key artistic disciplines — including writing — are not departments where the company is replacing creative input. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact roles.
"Our studio is not releasing a game with any AI components, nor looking at trimming down staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
