Citizens have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future administration of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home now and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the evening falls, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported additional dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south, medics reported.
